Beyond Success — What To Do When You’ve Achieved A Lifelong Goal — Lorraine Hamilton

Usually I talk about achieving a goal or achieving success, but what happens when you’ve done that?

What’s next?

Goals achieved?

I speak monthly at a retreat for patients of weight loss surgery. It’s an amazing piece of work that I’m so proud to be a part of. And many times when I’m at the retreat, I’m talking to a room of people who have had a battle with weight loss for their whole lives, and then they have the surgery and we give them a lot of wrap around support in mindset and behavioural change work. So they really are set up for life, that this is not something that they ever have to worry about again, in the way that they have before. But what happens is they’ve been so focused on weight loss being their lifelong focus and goal that when they achieve it, what’s next. And it can kind of feel like the rug’s being pulled out from under you. And I see it in my business clients as well from time to time that, you know, they’re so focused on the hustle and getting this business off the ground, that when it is, and it’s up there and it’s doing its thing that they feel a little bit lost.

What’s next?

Redefine your focus

That’s when it’s time to redefine what your focus is going to be. We like having something to work towards, whether it’s career, family health or something else, but it’s so easy to lose our sense of all the different parts of us when we’ve been singularly focused on one thing for a long time. So some of the participants of my group coaching program (that I’m affectionately calling the Purple Hair Revolution at the moment) are in exactly that place right now. They’ve been so focused on other people or one singular goal for such a long time, that it’s difficult for them to even conceive of what they might want for themselves in the future.

Wheel of Life

It’s a process that I go through with all of my clients and it’s an audit of looking at all of the areas of your life and what’s most important to you. And that helps to give you the clarity or helps to breed the clarity that might help you find your next focus. So some of the things that you might want to consider exploring and doing an audit on in your own life and your career. It’s not about having everything perfect by any stretch of the imagination. It’s about getting that healthy blend for you.

  • How happy are you in your career? Give it a score out of 10, then go through these other life areas as well;
  • friends and family,
  • fun and recreation,
  • your health,
  • financial security,
  • your physical environment — That is where you live, where you spend most of your time. So your work environment, your home environment, if you spend a lot of time away from both of those, your physical environment, how satisfied are you with that?
  • Romance or your significant other?
  • And contribution, where you feel that you are making a positive contribution?

Once you’ve given them all a score out of 10 as to how satisfied you are with them today. You begin to see where there might be some that have a much higher score than others, and some that are much lower. And like I said before, it’s not about getting everything perfect.

Clarity of Focus

It’s about seeing where things might be out of balance a little bit, and that can give you some clarity around where to focus your attention and where you might want to give yourself a little bit of a challenge or a goal to make things even better.

If you find yourself not really knowing where to look and what to do to even set a goal or make some change, then I hope you find this useful. And if you’d like more information about the Purple Hair Revolution, then visit https://www.lorrainehamilton.net/group-coaching
